The station picked up the Bronze Award in the Station Of The Year category at this year's HBA Hospital Radio Awards. The winners were announced at a special Gala Dinner in Glasgow on Saturday 4th May. The Station Of The Year category of this year's competition, sponsored by PPL, drew entries from two hundred hospital radio stations across the UK. In addition to the Bronze Award in 2001, Radio Warneford won the Regional Station Of The Year award in 1996 and was one of three stations to go forward to the national final, winning the Runner-Up Award. The station also won the Regional Station Of The Year award in 1991 and was a Regional Runner-Up in 1997. Ley Bricknell, the Station Manager, said "This award recognises the hard work and dedication of Radio Warneford's volunteer members who spend much of their free time putting together a wide range of programmes to entertain and inform patients and staff at Warwick Hospital. It's a particular privilege to receive this award because it is decided by representatives of both the Hospital Broadcasting Association and the wider radio industry." Radio Warneford began broadcasting in 1973, initially for six weeks, to provide entertainment for patients at the Warneford Hospital over the Christmas period. Twenty-nine years later, the station is now based at Warwick Hospital and broadcasts for 37 hours a week. Radio Warneford also plays an active role within the hospital.
